Forced to retreat to his sister’s country estate, The Viscount Chippenham happens upon Miss Charlotte Campion, who is running away from her grandfather to her brother in London. Chippy demonstrates, very forcibly, her inability to defend herself from less honorable men, and she reluctantly agrees to accompany him to his sister’s estate.
His sister realizes that her brother has compromised Miss Campion and suggests that he marry her, not only to save her reputation but to be able to access his trust funds fully. Chippy promises Charlotte that theirs will be a marriage of convenience until she is ready to assume her wifely duties. Each begins falling in love with the other as their passion grows, but Charlotte wants her husband to love her before she submits to him.
